Responding to Chaos with Coherence

Dear friends,
Last month I shared with you my explorations of the interstitial fluid, the network of fluid-filled spaces and connective tissue found throughout our bodies. The interstitium’s unique structure and function have led the scientific community to reconsider this system as an organ unto itself. Interstitial fluid plays an important role in the flow of communication responsible for system-wide coherence.
At its root, Coherence means “sticking” (-herence) together (-co). Living life with integrity, in accordance with our values and beliefs promotes personal coherence. Coherence can also be described as the molecular attraction by which the particles are united (i.e., stick together). This fundamental principle, observed in physics and biology, extends to human physiology and well-being.

In times of chaos, finding coherence can be both a challenge and a necessity. When the world around us feels turbulent and unpredictable, we have the potential to respond with clarity and calm. Today, I want to explore with you how we can create coherence amidst chaos, drawing on the principles of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy.

In our bodies, coherence manifests as a harmonious state where systems function in synchrony, promoting health, stability, and resilience. When coherence is disrupted—whether by stress, trauma, or illness—that balance is compromised, often resulting in dysfunction or disease.

At a physiological level, coherence is seen in the rhythmic interplay of bodily systems. The nervous system, cardiovascular system, and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics all rely on synchronized patterns to maintain homeostasis. When coherence is present, heart rate variability is optimized, brainwave patterns exhibit stable rhythms, and cellular processes function with efficiency.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is a unique approach to restoring coherence, facilitating the body’s innate capacity for self-regulation and healing. BCST practitioners tune into the subtle movements of the craniosacral system—a dynamic fluid system influencing the brain and spinal cord—to mobilize areas of restriction and facilitate their release.

By holding a space of deep stillness and attunement, we help the body reestablish its natural rhythms, allowing coherence to re-emerge. This process does not target symptoms but instead supports the body’s intrinsic wisdom, encouraging a full return to coherence.

The principle of coherence in BCST is inextricable from the human experience. Emotional and psychological coherence are connected to physical well-being. When we feel safe, supported, and in tune with our environment, our physiological systems regulate more effectively, leading to profound states of relaxation, emotional release, and a sense of wholeness.

Runners and others know this feeling of coherence as being “in the zone”. BCST has been found to build heart coherence, which is associated with emotional stability and overall well-being. This aspect is particularly beneficial during the postpartum period, supporting bonding and attachment between mother and child.

In a world where fragmentation—both physical and emotional—is a common experience, practices like Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy offer a path to coherence. By working with the body’s inherent unity, BCST reminds us that well-being is not about fixing isolated parts but about restoring the deep, underlying coherence that allows us to function as an integrated whole.

Our bodies and minds are intricately connected, much like the relationship between the wind and the sand. When the external world feels overwhelming, turning inward can reveal the patterns and rhythms that guide us back to balance. BCST offers a gentle and profound way to this inner harmony. By working with the body’s natural healing abilities, we can release tension and restore a sense of coherence and well-being.

Over the next months, we’ll continue to explore coherence, and especially heart coherence, with its many benefits and rewards, one of which is reduced stress and anxiety. Heart coherence regulates the autonomic nervous system, helping us shift from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) dominance to a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state, making it easier to manage stressful situations. For those of you who are new, BCST sessions are designed to support individuals of all ages, from infants to adults. Whether you’re seeking relief from physical discomfort or looking to enhance your emotional resilience, these sessions provide a nurturing environment for healing and growth.

I also offer Infant Developmental Movement Education and  Baby Bodywork sessions. These programs are tailored to support the developmental milestones of infants, providing parents with the tools they need to foster their child’s growth and well-being.

As we navigate the complexities of life, let’s remember that coherence is not just a state of being but a practice of connecting with ourselves and our surroundings. I invite you to book a session and experience the transformative power of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy.

Thank you for being part of this journey towards health and harmony. I look forward to supporting you in achieving a sense of coherence in your life.

Namaste,
Dr. Ellyce di Paola
