The Art of Moving while Standing Still
Dear Friends,
As July rolls into summer’s abundance, I find myself reflecting on the nature of balance as a verb, as a living, dynamic process, reminding me that true equilibrium is something we practice, step by step, movement by movement, breath by breath, and choice by choice.
The Dance of Dynamic Equilibrium
In my years working with clients of all ages, from newborns learning to roll to adults seeking relief from pain, I witness again and again how the body is always in motion—even in stillness. Whether in a Biodynamic Craniosacral Session or during our everyday activities, our systems are continuously making tiny adjustments, seeking a state of ease and homeostasis in response to the changing environment.
This is the dance of dynamic equilibrium. When we acknowledge balance as an active process, we can be more compassionate with ourselves and others when we wobble, knowing that holding onto balance is less important than losing it and regaining it, much like the concept of Rupture and Repair.
Rupture reflects a period of uncertainty and struggle. Repair comes into play as we learn to navigate life and and find a new balance point. Rupture and Repair involve new coping skills, fostering a deeper understanding of oneself, and leaning into the uncertainty to find your balance.
Listening for Shift
Balance is about responsiveness, not about perfection. Our bodies are constantly sending signals—sometimes whispers, sometimes shouts—when we drift off center. In Craniosacral Baby Bodywork and Infant Developmental Movement Education, we honor these subtle cues, helping little ones (and their families) discover the inherent wisdom of responding rather than forcing, building babies’ proprioception and interoception skills. For adults, tuning into these signals can be the first step toward easing tension, restoring calm, and reclaiming a sense of presence and stability.
Somatic Reflection: Practicing Balance in Daily Life
- I invite you to take a quiet moment today to notice how balance feels in your body—not static, but as a conversation.
- Try standing on one foot, or simply pause while walking and observe your center of gravity.
- Where do you sense movement?
- Where do you sense stillness?
- What small shift can you make to feel supported in this moment?
Supporting Your Journey
If you find yourself seeking support in navigating life’s inevitable wobbles, I warmly invite you to explore Biodynamic Craniosacral Sessions. Each session is a gentle invitation to reconnect with your body’s own wisdom, to practice balance as an intentional act, and to discover new ways to meet yourself with kindness and curiosity.
