Embodiment as the Foundation for Recovery
Dear friends,
Another October finds me recovering from another unanticipated surgery- this time to remove a lobe of my right lung after testing found a malignancy there. And as this gorgeous photo shows, the golden light of my daughter’s home in Vermont was a welcome recovery retreat.
All events change us: Some more than others, yes? This surgery and recovery come at a transitional time in my life and the life of our community. How to embrace transition as transformation?
In response, I find myself reflecting on the gentle, transformative power of embodied practices—these quiet rituals and moments of attention/intention that help us return to ourselves, especially during times of recovery and renewal. In my life and in my sessions with clients, I am privileged to witness how small acts of presence can become anchors, supporting well-being amidst uncertainty and change.
Embodiment as the Foundation for Recovery
Recovery—whether from illness, stress, injury, or surgery—rarely happens in a straight line. Instead, it ebbs and flows, inviting us to listen more closely to the subtle cues of our bodies and hearts.
Embodiment practices offer a way to meet ourselves where we are, fostering a sense of agency and gentle self-compassion. Through Biodynamic Craniosacral Sessions, I encourage clients to notice not just what is difficult, but also the spaces and places of ease that can be nurtured and expanded with attention and intention.
For those healing from injuries or recovering after surgery, the principles of craniosacral therapy can be especially supportive. Gentle touch and attuned presence help our nervous systems shift from a state of stress to rest and repair— essential for tissue healing and pain reduction.
For example, I have worked with clients post-surgery who found thal craniosacral sessions eased swelling, reduced discomfort, and fostered a sense of ease in the body, making each stage of recovery more manageable and less overwhelming.
Craniosacral work is rooted in the belief that the body possesses an innate wisdom and capacity for healing. By tuning in to subtle rhythms—such as the movement of fluids and the gentle pulse of tissues—we support the body’s natural healing processes.
Clients often share that after a session they feel lighter and more connected, with a renewed sense of hope. Whether you are managing pain, rebuilding strength, or simply seeking a steady hand during a vulnerable time, embodiment and craniosacral support create a nurturing environment for your unique healing path.
Simple Practices for Everyday Well-being
Mindful embodiment practices need not be elaborate. Sometimes, the most profound shifts come from the simplest acts:
Pausing to notice the rhythm of your breath, especially when you feel tension rising.
Taking a few minutes to scan your body for sensations of warmth, coolness, heaviness, or lightness.
Allowing yourself a moment of stillness before transitioning from one activity to the next.
Bringing gentle movement—such as stretching or swaying—to areas that feel stuck or fatigued.
In my practice, I see how integrating these embodied mindful pauses into daily life can support the body’s natural rhythms of regulation and repair. Over time, these small acts accumulate, creating a foundation of resilience and ease that supports deeper healing.
Somatic Reflection: Cultivating Presence
I invite you to take a quiet moment now:
Find a comfortable seat and let your hands rest gently on your lap or over your heart.
Notice the contact your body makes with the surface beneath you. Can you sense support rising up to meet you?
With each breath, invite a little more softness into your shoulders, jaw, and belly.
As thoughts or distractions arise, gently return your attention to the sensation of your breath or the warmth of your hands.
This simple practice of returning—again and again—to presence is at the heart of recovery. It reminds us that healing begins with listening and allowing, rather than striving or fixing.
Biodynamic Craniosacral Session, therapeutic touch invites your body’s fluids to move, recalibrate, and bring nourishment to wherever you need it most. This gentle listening and supporting from within allows space for deep shifts, sometimes in ways more profound than we expect.
Somatic Reflection: Flow and Connection
I’d like to invite you into a brief embodied exploration:
Take a moment to notice the sensations between the surface of your skin and deep within. Is there a quality of lightness, density, coolness, or warmth?
Gently shift your position, wiggle your fingers and toes, or take a few slow breaths. Do you notice any sense of movement or change in these subtle spaces?
Wherever you might feel tension or heaviness, imagine a gentle stream flowing through, softening and renewing you with each breath.
