Farewell September

Farewell September, a whirlwind of a month!

Spent a brilliant evening with Michelle Goitia’s JC Bump and Baby at her Nesting 101 event for expecting and new parents. We were 20 professionals, resources for expectant and new parents, gathered to meet directly with families, many of whom are first time parents and are generally unaware of what’s available to them.

The lovely woman with me, Victoria Trinko, is the cofounder of Seed Mother, a tremendous resource for evidence-based, mother-centered maternal education. I encourage all my expectant and new parents to lean on her and her team for psychoeducational support in understanding the changes associated with matrescence.

And before that, I delivered my Baby Bodywork class for new parents as part of the Boram Postnatal Retreat experience here in Manhattan. It is a privilege to be part of a community that nurtures infants and supports parents through the transition to parenthood.

September also brought us Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen’s Fall 2024 series of Body-Mind Centering ® , Balancing the Two Sides of the Body. It’s an incredible education in embodiment and balancing of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, all framed within embryological development.

Balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems is at the root of Craniosacral therapy (CST). Toning the parasympathetic increases our potential for rest, recuperation, and regeneration. Attending to  the sympathetic raises our alertness, attentiveness, and action.

I am often asked how effective CST is for sleep disturbances- for both babies and adults. One of the most frequent responses I hear is how well they slept following the session. This sentiment is backed up by research:  A recent (2023) study out of India found that CST significantly improved sleep quality in study participants.

For babies, CST is very effective for helping babies relax and sleep more hours more consistently. A 2019 randomized controlled trial (RCT)  study found that CST significantly reduced the time spent crying and increased the total hours of sleep for a sample group of infants with colic.
