Exploring the Connections
Dear friends,
Reflecting on the many journeys I’ve witnessed—both in my practice and as a parent—it is ever clearer how the earliest movements of infancy lay the groundwork for a lifetime of emotional resilience. Each gentle roll, reach, and curl is more than just a milestone; it is a dialogue between the body and the mind, a foundation for how we interact with life’s challenges and joys.
Why Early Movement Matters
Infant developmental movement is much more than physical growth. These early patterns—rooting, grasping, and rolling—are the body’s way of learning trust, safety, and adaptability. When an infant has the space and support to explore movement, the nervous system learns to regulate itself. This is the beginning of emotional resilience: the ability to move through life’s ups and downs with flexibility and steadiness.
Research and clinical experience affirm that infants who are gently guided through their developmental movements exhibit greater self-soothing, deeper sleep, and more robust social engagement as they grow. These benefits ripple outward, supporting not only the child but also the well-being of the entire family.
How Movement Shapes Emotional Health
In my pediatric sessions— Infant Developmental Movement Education and Craniosacral Baby Bodywork—I witness how movement and touch nurture these roots of resilience. A baby who feels safe to move, to be held, and to be seen, learns that the world is a safe place to explore. This sense of safety is the ground from which emotional flexibility and confidence grow.
For parents and caregivers, understanding and supporting these early patterns can be transformative. Even ten intentional minutes a day of movement and connection can improve feeding, foster restful sleep, and build the foundation for a resilient, emotionally healthy child.
Somatic Reflection:
Sensing Resilience in Your Child—and Yourself
I invite you to take a quiet moment with your child or by yourself. Notice the subtle ways movement brings comfort—how a gentle sway, a soft touch, or a deep breath can shift the mood.
Ask yourself:
- What patterns of movement bring a sense of calm and safety?
- How does your child respond to your gentle support and encouragement?
- What do you notice in your own body as you stay in this presence?
Each small act of mindful attention—each intentional moment of movement and connection—supports not just your child’s development, but your own capacity for resilience and well-being.
Embryological Foundations: The Roots of Craniosacral Therapy
Developmental Embryology, the study and embodiment of it, understanding how our embryology and subsequent imprints shape us has deepened my awareness of the origins of my own physical, emotional, and cognitive patterns; and Embryological development is at the core of both the Craniosacral Therapy and Body-Mind Centering(R) approaches that are at the center of my practice.
Before birth, our bodies are shaped by the gentle, rhythmic movements of embryological development. These earliest motions—waves of growth, folding, and differentiation—lay the blueprint for our nervous system and craniosacral rhythm. Craniosacral therapy draws on this foundational wisdom, honoring the body’s inherent capacity for healing that begins even before our first breath. By supporting these primal movements, we nurture the deepest roots of our resilience and well-being.
