Silence, Solstice, and the Stillpoint
Dear friends,
Standing at the threshold of the year’s solstice settling, nature’s rhythms nudge us inward. As the earth quiets and the northern hemisphere sidles toward its seasonal slumber, we, too, are called to follow this turning within, finding silence, embracing stillness. Diving deeply down, like the roots of the trees, we, too, are interconnected, nourishing one another and creating a shared sense of peace and inner balance.
This month, I’ve been exploring the medicine of silence and stillness. Silence prepares us for the stillness—for a pause in the effervescent movement of life, allowing external distractions to fade and inner awareness to emerge.
Stillness heightens our ability to enjoy the silence, creating room for clarity and connection. Stillness is the “presence behind the silence,” (Tolle, 2004) where we meet again our deeper, authentic selves, inviting transformation, introspection, and renewal.
In craniosacral therapy (CST), silence and stillness come together in the stillpoint, a therapeutic approach that instantly dials down your stress level. The stillpoint is a moment where the usually rhythmic flow of our craniosacral rhythm can pause and create a therapeutic window for the body to recalibrate and release tension.
Much like the “empty mind” of meditation or prayer, the stillpoint is an opportunity for profound healing and renewal. By raising the tone of your body’s restorative nervous system, the parasympathetics, your body-mind naturally re-balances.
How often do we allow ourselves to pause and truly be? Can we allow silence to be a gateway to presence and inner peace? In CST, we recognize the stillpoint as the gateway to awareness and healing, where the body’s innate wisdom leads the way.
When we embrace the silence and the stillpoint, we are laying the ground for transformation, reminding us that healing often arises not from doing, but from being—from resting in the quiet rhythms of life and allowing the body and mind to align naturally.
Silence and craniosacral therapy’s stillpoint are an invitation to reconnect with ourselves to go inward until we can sense the vastness of the universe within.
As we embrace the stillness and silence of winter, we are reminded that the stillpoint, much like the solstice, invites us to reconnect with the deeper rhythms within us and the vast universe beyond, planting seeds of transformation—nurturing body, mind, and spirit in harmony.
I hope you’ll make time to dwell in quiet repose and sit in the synapse, as nature and the solstice invite us to now, in this season of dark giving way to light.
As we enter the season of Giving and Receiving, I invite you to reflect on how you give and receive touch, and how does it make you feel? Remember, touch—whether in daily life or a CST session—should always feel safe, respectful, and intentional, fostering connection and restoration.
