Headaches, TMJ, and Tension

Giving Thanks

Dear friends,

I am immensely grateful for all the support from my communit[ies] near and far; I recognize how fortunate I am to have a well of strength and integrity on which to draw. I send you all my deepest thanks and great respect for all that we hold, so much of it unseen and unspoken, and nonetheless weighty.

❅As many of you know, I have been receiving treatment for stage 2 lung cancer, having had a lobe of my lung removed, followed by a rigorous chemotherapy protocol that is now in progress. As the year accelerates toward winter, into darkness, and turning inward, I am reflecting on the quiet and often insistent ways our bodies ask for care.

Understanding Headaches, TMJ, and Tension

Many of you have shared stories with me of awakening with pressure across the forehead or a feeling of familiar tightness at the base of the skull and jaw. It’s a daily reality for so many, and one that can surreptitiously shape our mood, focus, and sense of ease. There is perhaps no symptom more common than the persistent ache of headaches or the tension of TMJ.

According to the International Headache Society, tension headaches are the most widespread, often beginning with tightness in the neck and occipital muscles at the base of the skull. These headaches are frequently linked to TMJ dysfunction, eye strain, previous injuries, or emotional stress.

TMJ-related headaches can show up as pain or stiffness around the jaw, temples, and ears—sometimes with clicking sounds and limited range of movement. When left unaddressed, these patterns radiate tension throughout the neck and shoulders, amplifying discomfort over time.

Gentle Touch, Deep Relief: BCST and Healing

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) offers relief that doesn’t force and instead listens deeply to the body’s rhythms. Through subtle, non-invasive contact, BCST helps the nervous system unwind tension patterns by creating ease throughout the body.

In my practice, I witness how BCST can be especially effective navigating migraines or cluster headaches. Unlike approaches that focus solely on the site of pain, craniosacral therapy attends to the whole system, soothing the underlying stress responses that often perpetuate chronic discomfort. Clients frequently share that, beyond pain relief, they experience a deeper sense of internal calm and an increased ability to respond to life’s daily challenges with greater resilience and repose.

Many clients notice that after a session, the frequency and intensity of their headaches diminish, and a sense of calm and resilience takes hold. Craniosacral therapy’s gentle approach is particularly well-suited for those who feel overwhelmed by more forceful methods, providing a safe space for the body to recalibrate at its own pace.

BCST’s unique focus is on the body’s innate rhythms and capacity for self-healing. Rather than attempting to fix a problem, BCST invites the body to find new patterns of ease from the inside out. Over time, this supports relief from headaches and TMJ-related discomfort and fosters a broader sense of well-being, helping you reconnect with your body’s inherent wisdom and restorative power.

The Trigeminal Connection

A key player in facial and jaw-related headaches is the Trigeminal Nerve, which branches across the face and jaw and is deeply involved in TMJ and sinus-related pain. What’s fascinating is that the root of this nerve sits just beneath a small hollow in each of the two temporal bones, under the hinge of the jaw—a region BCST can gently access to support release and regulation. By easing the constriction in this area, the therapy supports relief not just from pain, but from the underlying tension that so often fuels it.

What the Research Says

Recent studies have shown that most headache types respond well to Craniosacral Therapy, with clients reporting less pain, fewer episodes, and improved well-being. In one study, 74% of patients with TMJ symptoms experienced significant improvement with CST. Beyond pain relief, BCST helps regulate the underlying stress, anxiety, and autonomic imbalance that make headaches worse. Over time, this gentle process can raise your system’s pressure-pain threshold, making you more resilient to everyday triggers.
