Have you ever wondered- What exactly is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy had its origins in the work of American osteopath, Dr. William Sutherland, Osteopath (1873-1954). The Biodynamic model of Craniosacral therapy owes much to Franklin Sills (b. 1947), who proposed that “intrinsic health integrates all cellular and tissue form and function, from the moment of conception until death, and is constantly at work maintaining the best possible balance and homeostasis even in the most desperate circumstances”.

Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy differs from the Biomechanical model primarily in its holistic approach. In the Biodynamic model, we start by observing the whole person as in integrated and multidimensional entity. It is from this wholeness that the Practitioner attunes to the symphony of currents and rhythms that make up this vibrant being in front of us. We listen to the orchestra of the individual before attending to any one of its parts. In comparison, the Biomechanical model of Craniosacral therapy focuses on the individual parts that make up the whole. So, while both Biodynamic and Biomechanical models focus on the Cerebrospinal fluid, cranium, sacrum and connective tissues, their approaches are quite different.

Our fluid bodies hold stress and trauma beneath the surface of the skin at a cellular level, imprinting the tissues with patterns of restriction and immobility. Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy utilizes the wisdom of the body’s instinctual intelligence to restore the natural rhythms of the body’s innate healing to cells and tissues, bringing a sense of vitality and coherence that lasts well beyond a session. Initial sessions are generally 60-75 minutes with follow up sessions 50-60 minutes in length. The patient remains fully clothed throughout while the practitioner uses light contact with the hands, listening and attuning to the client in repose.

Sessions produce a sense of deep relaxation, which generally lasts beyond the session. With repeated treatments, this release extends into daily living, and can be effective resolving physical aches and pains, acute and chronic disease, emotional or psychological disturbances, or to develop well-being, health, and vitality. Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy is very gentle and is appropriate for babies, children, adults, and the elderly, including those in fragile or acute painful conditions. It is especially helpful for babies and children with excessive crying, digestion or latch difficulties, tightness or tilt of the head and neck, and asymmetrical face and skull.
